What is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured, evidence-based therapy designed to help the brain naturally heal from traumatic or distressing life experiences.
Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR doesn't require you to describe your traumatic memories in meticulous detail. Instead, it focuses on changing the way those memories are stored in your brain.
How EMDR Heals Trauma: The Analogy of an Unorganized Filing Cabinet
When a traumatic event occurs, the brain’s natural information processing system gets overwhelmed. The experience gets "frozen" in your nervous system exactly as it happened—complete with the original sights, sounds, thoughts, and painful bodily sensations.
Think of a traumatic memory like a bulky, disorganized pile of papers left sitting out on a desk. Every time something reminds you of the trauma, it's like a gust of wind blows those papers everywhere, making you relive the distress all over again.
EMDR acts as a system for organizing those files. By using bilateral stimulation (typically side-to-side eye movements, tapping, or audio tones), EMDR stimulates both sides of the brain. This mimics the natural processing that happens during REM (dream) sleep.
During a session, this processing takes the raw, painful memory and safely moves it into your brain's long-term memory filing cabinet.
The Results of EMDR
Once a memory is successfully filed away:
The emotional charge is removed: You will still remember that the event happened, but you will no longer feel the intense physical or emotional distress (like panic, racing heart, or anger) when you think about it.
Shift in perspective: Negative beliefs about yourself born from the trauma (e.g., "I am unsafe" or "It was my fault") naturally transform into adaptive, healthy beliefs (e.g., "It is over, I am safe now" or "I did the best I could").
Because EMDR targets the root neurological storage of trauma, it often brings about significant relief much faster than traditional therapy methods.
Strict 45–50 minute limit
High risk of being left "on a cliff" mid-memory
Managed care corporations can audit files
Mandatory permanent DSM-5 label
Wasted time checking in/out weekly over months
Flexible 2 to 4-hour blocks
Time to process memories to full resolution
100% clinician-client confidentiality
None required to receive care
Rapid momentum; months of therapy in days
Healing Without Limits: Why We Choose Private Pay for EMDR Intensives
When you are ready to heal from trauma, the clock shouldn't get in your way.
Many clients ask why we do not contract with insurance companies for our EMDR Intensives. The honest answer is simple: Insurance rules restrict how deeply, how safely, and how fast you can heal.
By choosing private pay (self-pay) for your EMDR Intensive, you are investing in a premium tier of care that prioritizes your safety, your privacy, and your results over a corporate bottom line.
1. The Clock Belongs to You, Not an Insurance Company
Standard insurance plans almost universally restrict therapy to strict 45-to-50-minute blocks once a week. For deep trauma processing, this artificial time limit is structurally flawed.
The Risk of the Hourly Buzzer: EMDR opens up highly distressing neural networks. If you are in the middle of processing a heavy memory when the 50-minute mark hits, an insurance-bound therapist is forced to abruptly stop, try to pack away your raw emotion, and send you home feeling raw and destabilized.
The Intensive Advantage: In our 2-Hour Jump Start or 4-Hour Intensive formats, your brain has the luxury of time. We open the memory network, thoroughly process the distress, and safely bring your nervous system back to a state of total resolution and calm—all in the same day. We open the wound once, clean it completely, and let it heal.
2. Protect Your Absolute Privacy
To clear a claim, insurance companies have the legal right to audit your clinical notes, track your progress, and demand justifications for your care.
Private Pay Keeps it Private: Your clinical files stay strictly between us. No third-party corporate reviewer will ever see the deeply personal details of your trauma processing or dictate how many sessions you are allowed to have.
3. No Forced, Permanent Mental Health Labels
Insurance companies operate on a medical model. To pay for your session, they strictly require a formal, permanent mental health diagnosis (like PTSD or Major Depressive Disorder) on your permanent medical record.
Heal Without the Label: Many people seek EMDR to process specific life transitions, performance blocks, grief, or old childhood memories without wanting a permanent psychiatric diagnosis attached to their health or life insurance records. Private pay protects your record.
4. Focus on Growth, Not Just "Medical Necessity"
Insurance only covers treatment deemed "medically necessary"—meaning you must be actively struggling or in survival mode for them to pay. The moment you start improving, they can abruptly cut off your coverage.
Thrive, Don't Just Survive: Healing shouldn't stop when you reach baseline functioning. Private pay allows us to seamlessly transition from survival mode into deep personal growth, resilience-building, and thriving, without fear of losing your care.
High-impact trauma care should be accessible. To help you invest in your healing without financial strain, flexible payment options are offered.

Important Notice: Our Safety & Readiness Policy
To ensure your emotional safety, stability, and overall well-being, all new clients must complete a comprehensive initial intake and readiness assessment before beginning an EMDR Intensive.
EMDR is a powerful neurological process. Just as a surgeon evaluates a patient's physical health before a procedure, we must carefully assess your current coping resources, stability, and readiness for deep trauma processing. If our initial screening indicates that you need foundational stabilization tools first, we will prioritize building those resources to ensure your intensive experience is both safe and highly effective.
Because client safety is our highest priority, the clinician reserves the right to refuse or defer EMDR treatment if a client is assessed as not clinically ready.
This decision is made strictly for liability, safety, and ethical reasons to prevent psychological destabilization. If EMDR is not recommended at this time, we will discuss appropriate alternative therapeutic steps or referrals to support your stabilization.
